Sewage and floodwaters contain bacteria and other hazardous microorganisms. These can be transmitted by touching contaminated items or by tracking them into uncontaminated areas on shoes. Children and pets are especially vulnerable.
It is very important to begin mitigation procedures as soon as possible to minimize subsequent health hazards and primary property loss and to avoid secondary damage to structural materials or microorganism development (mold and mildew).
Loss mitigation begins with rapid response and involves reasonable and prudent steps required to preserve, protect and secure property from additional secondary damage.
In the event of sewage back-up, do the following:
- Stay calm! Call Rainbow International.
- Treat all sewage-impacted surfaces and furnishings as unhealthy and potentially hazardous.
- Keep children and pets out of the affected area.
- Avoid touching affected areas/ items; if it is necessary to do so, use protective equipment.
- Contact the septic company/ public utility to address the source of the back-up.
- If there is no risk of electrical shock, turn off the breaker in the damaged area before you unplug or remove any electrical devices located on the wet carpet.
- Turn off any forced air systems or fans, as they oftentimes spread contamination and circulate bacteria into the air.

Do not attempt the following:
- Don’t attempt to clean anything with household equipment or supplies. Sewage contains harmful bacteria and microorganisms, and should only be cleaned by a trained and certified restoration company that has experience with hazardous waste.
- Don’t remove anything from your property for disposal, ESPECIALLY any plumbing debris responsible for the loss, or any damaged items slated for disposal. The insurance company must have the right to see both. If not, they can deny your claim or deny coverage for discarded contents.
